Reharmonizing Melodies

An interesting exercise for advanced students is to take a simple melody and reharmonize it. Here, TAGA instructor Aaron plays his arrangement of "Grandfather's Clock". Aaron also includes a quote from a Hirai Ken arrangement of the same melody.

He also subtly weaves in the "Westminster Chime", heard several times a day in Japanese schools! These melodies are in different meters, and Aaron juxtaposes them in an intriguing way.

Aaron says: “I wrote this arrangement to challenge myself over two years ago and then just left it. I really wanted to share it at the time and I think it’s about time I get it out there and out of the way. It’s a mashup of a lot of composition and arrangement ideas and I wanted to see if they were possible on solo guitar. "
